Each year, the National Fire Protection Association and the Department of Homeland Security's United States Fire Administration raise awareness during Fire Prevention Week. This year's theme is "Itís Fire Prevention Week: Prevent Home Fires!" It's not enough to know "Stop, Drop, {cover your face} and Roll" and "Get out and Stay out". You need to know HOW to get out!

This year we had 7 Pre-School/Kindergartens, 12 Kindergarten classes, and two Mom's Club's, and attended the multi fire company event Thursday 9th in the evening at Suburbia Village. We talked to about 517 children and adults, at the (Pre)Schools, during Fire Prevention week. We also "did" 5, large, community events for an additional 1,158 children and adults where we answered questions, let the kids/adults try on real firefighter gear, check out fire trucks. We also gave out safety pamphlets, safety oriented coloring books, pencils and stickers with a safety message, as well as some fun pencil toppers. We also "pushed" the Reflective Signs that we sell. {"If we can't find you, we can't help you!"} To each of the (Pre)School groups we gave a talk about having a fire safety plan about getting out of a house.  We talked about having WORKING Smoke Detectors and testing the detectors several times a year and replacing the batteries at least once a year, the current recommendation is that during the switch to/from Daylight Savings Time "Change your Clocks, Change your Batteries!"   We had one of the adults from each group be a "firefighter" and put on a firefighters full fire fighting gear.  Once full suited up a fire fighter looks and sounds scary to young children.  The kids usually say the "firefighter" sounds "like Darth Vader". Once fully geared we have the "firefighter" walk around saying "I'm a firefighter, I'm here to help you". We wanted them to see that it was a "regular" person, someone they know, inside all that gear.  In the pictures below, the person you see getting in the full set of "Turn Out Gear" {also called "Bunker Gear"} with mask and air pack, is one of the instructors/parents that the kids know. We "charged" one of the small fire hoses and allowed the children to turn the nozzle on and off spraying water. While we kept the pressure low for the kids, we didn't want to have to get the kids back from the next county, we "ran" the pressure up, close to what we use as a working pressure, when we could get the instructors/parents to try the hose. Everyone kid, young and old, enjoy running a fire hose!!! The children had fun, and, with reinforcement from the teachers, will learn something.  We also have done several community day information handout programs and will be talking with scout, etc. groups during the school year.

For more information on having a Tour of the Fire House or having a talk/truck at your event visit our Tours Page.

Pictures are from the (Pre)School events as well as some of the community based ones.
