At 1241Hrs on Saturday, September 12, 2009 just before the 4th Annual Community Day was about to commence as members were busy getting equipment and activities set up inside the station, the Chester County Fire Board dispatched the Ridge Fire Co. (Station 62) and Elverson Area EMS (Ambulance 89) To the Ryerss Farm for Aged Equines on Ridge Rd in Warwick Twp for a Barn Fire. Deputy 62, Engine 62-1, Engine 62-5, and Engine 62-2 responded immediately and were advised the barn, which contained between 3,500 & 4,000 bales of hay, was fully involved and there were still horses and other animals housed in the lower level. With the information received Deputy 62 requested the full 2nd alarm struck bring the full station out of Twin Valley Fire Dept. (Station 69) to the scene. Just prior to Deputy 62s arrival a large header of smoke was visible from a distance and the rural location of the farm prompted the 3rd alarm being struck to bring additional tankers and engines to lay an approx. 2000 lay of 5inch hose down the driveway. The Ludwigs Corner Fire Co. (Station 73) and Norco Fire Co. (Station 64) were dispatched to handle the 3rd alarm. Deputy 62 arrived on scene with a large barn well off and assumed Ryerss Command. Command instructed all 62 units to the rear of the barn and the first in 69 Engines to start laying the 5 supply line down the driveway and attempt to establish a draft from the creek. Engine 62-1 deployed multiple CAFS handlines to the front and rear of the barn including the 2 Blitz Gun which was set up in the front where the hay was located. Engine 62-5 deployed lines and set up to supply 62-1 and Ladder 69 with water. Ladder 69 made its way down the driveway and was able to deploy its main aerial to open up the roof and utilize the CAFS master stream at the tip of the ladder.

Additional Tankers were called from all over the Tri-County area for water supply. Port-A-Ponds were set-up and a tanker shuttle was organized to keep the supply of water coming. Three separate fill sites were needed for the extensive operations of extinguishing the hay.

Once attack crews had the bulk of the visible fire extinguished, heavy machinery was called in to remove the hay and spread it out for extinguishment. At that time operations were shut down and apparatus backed out of the area so the machinery could access the barn. Fire apparatus was then redeployed to handle the hay removal. The machinery and fire crews worked hand in hand into the night removing hay until the hay was out of reach of the machinery. Command then requested the Chester County Fire Task Force which was mobilized and staging at Station 62 to the scene for manpower to assisted the already exhausted crews in removing the hay by hand.

For the final assault on the remaining smoldering hay Ladder 4 (Malvern) and Engine 62-5 put their master streams in service to soak the entire barn area 9 hours after the first units had arrived on scene to attack the fire. Manpower from Martins Corner (Station 34), Sadsburyville (Station 31), East Whiteland (Station 5) and Minquas Fire Company in Downingtown (Station 46) were called in to break down and repack the 2000ft of 5 supply line. From all the Companies that laid hose off their trucks that day a Special Thank You is given for their help in repacking it after close to 12hrs of being on scene. Well over 100,000 gals of water was used during the incident. Command was terminated at 2321Hrs with all units returning available. Chester County and PSP Fire Marshalls were called in to investigate the fire.

While all this was going on traffic had to be diverted from Route 23 where all these trucks and heavy equipment was coming and going and 2 portable ponds were set up for the tanker shuttle. To do this fire police from several companies were also on scene. From Chester County: Ridge Fire Co. {as primary} (Station 62), Kimberton (Station 61), Norco Fire Co. (Station 64), Ludwigs Corner Fire Co. (Station 73), and Twin Valley Fire Dept. (Station 69). From Montgomery County: Linfield Fire Company (Station 51), and Ringing Hill (Station 59).

A Grateful Thank You goes out to all mutual aid companies and support services that assisted at this incident and at the station with the Community Day and Clean up!

Thanks to DS Guest Excavating & Warwick County Park for bringing their Heavy Machinery into the scene to remove the hay! Thanks to Fleck Construction for transporting and operating Heavy Machinery!
