At 11:34pm, the Ridge Fire Co(62) and Elverson EMS(89) were alerted for a report of a house fire in the 200 block of Victoria Chase Drive in Warwick Township. As Chief 62(McMillan) was responding, the Chester County Fire Board advised of numerous 911 calls being received, reporting flames coming from the house. Chief 62 then requested the Twin Valley Fire Department be added to the assignment.
Battalion 62(Mowrer) and 62-31 (Grasso) were first to arrive onscene and found a 2-1/2 story single family dwelling "fully involved". Battalion 62 established "Victoria Chase Command" and requested the working fire dispatch and a "tanker task force". This re-alerted Station 62 and 69, and added Tower and Tanker 64(Norco Fire Co), Tanker 73(Ludwig's Corner), and Medic 93 (Brandywine Hospital Paramedics).
62 and 69 units responded within minutes and faced poor road conditions from an earlier snowfall and dense fog over the area reducing visibility considerably.
Engine 62-2 and 62-5 arrived onscene and set-up on the main road to begin firefighting operations. Ladder 69 arrived soon after the engines, and were instructed to set-up in the driveway for a "defensive operation". The aerial's master water stream was established and an exterior firefight was begun due to the entire home being involved in heavy fire. Command 62 requested a "second alarm tanker task force", which brought in Tanker
61(Kimberton), and Engine 63-5(Liberty). Lancaster Tanker 3-4(Churchtown) was on stand-by in Station 69-West, and Montgomery County Tanker 51(Linfield) was on stand-by in Station 62 when command requested they respond to the scene for water supply.
Crews from Ridge, Twin Valley and Norco advanced multiple handlines and were able to hold the fire to the main house. The majority of an attached garage was able to be saved, despite the large amount of fire that was encountered by the crews.
Engine 69-5 deployed handlines and also supplied Ladder 69's master stream, while Engine 62-5 supplied the 62 units flowing handlines. Rescue 69 set-up scene lighting and filled air bottles. Engine 69-1 was directed to find a fill site to handle the several tankers that were needed at the scene. A pond was found on Route 23 just west of the fireground, but the crew encountered 4 inches of ice covering the entire surface. The crew had to break thru the ice with various tools and were then able to complete their assigned task. A secound fill site was also established in the Ridglea Development off or Rt 23 in South Coventry. Rescue 62 relocated to the second fill site to supply the tankers in the shuttle. Due to the cold conditions PennDOT, Warwick, & South Coventry Road Crews were requested to Salt the fire scene and fill sites. The fire was placed under control at 0103hrs with extensive overall needed. FM 100 and FM 106 were dispatched to the scene for the investigation, and MedED Electric Utilities were called in to secure the power to the residence.
The volunteers worked long into the cold, dark night for several hours, due to extensive overhaul operations.
The final units cleared just before 4am.
