Extraction Drill 04/12/2005

Firefighters Practice Vehicle Extricating

On April 12, 2005 during our regular Tuesday evening training, firefighters practiced with extricating a victim, "George", from the rear of an overturned car. The vehicle was stabilized before any cutting began. "George" was located in the front passenger seat of the overturned car. Once the vehicle was stabilized in the front and rear sides, the hydraulic O Cutters were used to cut the B and C post on each side of the vehicle to allow the roof to drop and so the bottom of the car could then be raised. When all cuts were complete, inflatable air bags and the hydraulic spreader tool supported by wooden cribbing were used to raise the bottom of the car to allow more access so the victim can be removed more efficiently and safely.

Trainings like these allow firefighters to brush up on their rescue techniques, making them more efficient in real incident situations.
