Car Fire Drill - 08/23/2011

It's better to learn how to put out a car fire in a practice drill then during the "real thing". During a drill you can learn what you need to do, when, and how. Then, if we have the "real thing" we are prepared. In this case we had two cars that had been donated to the fire house to use for practice. The week before this particulare drill we had a drill, with the same two cars, where we cut the roofs off, removed the doors, "rolled" the dashboard, etc. Again, it's better to learn BEFORE the "real thing"!

In this drill we "geared up" in our bunker/turnout gear, donned our air packs, and put out a fire in a car. Part of this drill is getting used to having air packs on while working. You MUST have an air pack on for this type of fire as you have the foam and plastic burning and you don't want to breath the smoke. An air pack adds, about 20-25 lbs!! You also need to learn how to "pop" a hood on a car that is still burning so you can get to the engine to put out the fire. You need to learn, working as a team, how to move the hose around so you can spray up under the car, into the wheel wells, etc.

Note: Depending on the firehouse the protective clothing a firefighter wears is either refered to as bunker or turnout gear.

Many of these pictures have had their "Brightness" and "Contrast" adjusted to make it easier to see what is going on.

The size, maximum 600 pixels wide, and resolution has been changed on all of these pictures to speed loading and allow 2 side by side on a standard screen.
