2 Vehicle Accident - 11/23/2009

Fatal Accident on Rt. 724

  On Monday, November 23, 2009 at 2048Hrs the Chester County Fireboard alerted the Ridge Fire Co. (Station 62) and Goodwill Ambulance of Pottstown (MICU 329) for an auto accident with entrapment on Rt. 724 in front of the Calvary Baptist Church in East Coventry Twp. Chief 62 (McMillan) and 62-31 (M. Grasso) went responding and were advised that the caller stated 2 vehicles, one overturned, with some occupants entrapped or ejected. PD arrived on scene shortly after and confirmed the reports and requested fire police to shut down Rt. 724. 62-31 then requested fire police from Norco Fire Co. (Station 64). Assistant 62 (R. Kolb) arrived on location and requested a medical helicopter on stand-by and assumed Rt. 724 Command. Rescue 64 was also requested to assist due to occupants being heavily entrapped. Rescue 62 and 64 arrived and set-up on either side of the overturned vehicle to begin extrication. Engine 62-1 assisted with rescue personnel and Engine 64-1 handled the Landing Zone. A total of 4 patients were extricated from the overturned vehicle by rescue personnel. EMS crews from Goodwill, West End, and Friendship of Royersford were called to the scene. PennSTAR and University MedEvac provided rapid transport to a local trauma center. Unfortunately 2 patients were fatally injured in the crash despite rescue efforts. At 2200Hrs the resources on scene were scaled back to Engine 62-1, Squad 62, and fire police while the Chester County Serious Crash Investigation Team conducted their investigation. Due to the size of the incident and resources committed on scene Command had requested a rescue to stand-by at station 62. Rescue 69 from the Twin Valley Fire Dept. stood-by at Station 62. Rescue 62 and the Rescue and Engine out of 64 went available at 2200Hrs. The remaining crews cleared at 0136Hrs 11/24/09.

  Units On-Scene: Rescue 62, Engine 62-1, Squad 62, Rescue 64, Engine 64-1, Traffic 64, Medic 329-9, 329-8, 329-6, MICU 67-5, 1-67-3, Medic 325-1, PennSTAR 4, MedEvac 3, E.Coventry PD, E. Vincent PD, N. Coventry PD, and Chester County Coroner.

  Unit On Stand-By: Rescue 69 at Station 62
